Connecting MedAssist to an Existing NEMSIS Data Submission

Overview

MedAssist reviews patient care records using the same documentation already submitted through an agency's established NEMSIS reporting process.

For agencies that already transmit a NEMSIS data feed from their ePCR system to the state EMS repository, integrating MedAssist requires only one additional configuration: sending a second copy of the existing submission to a GovWorx endpoint.

The existing state submission remains unchanged. No modifications to documentation, reporting workflows, or data formats are required.

Because MedAssist evaluates the complete patient care report, the full NEMSIS record is transmitted directly to GovWorx for review.

Information Provided by GovWorx

During implementation, the GovWorx implementation specialist will provide:

  • Submission Endpoint (URL) – The destination for the additional NEMSIS submission.

  • Organization Identifier (Organization Key) – Identifies the submitting agency.

  • Shared Secret – Authenticates the connection and authorizes submissions.

If NEMSIS submissions are already configured within the ePCR system, no additional software modules or products are required. MedAssist uses the same submission capability already in place.

Configuring the ePCR System

Although configuration steps vary by vendor, the overall process is generally the same.

  1. Open the section of the ePCR system used to manage NEMSIS or state data submissions. Depending on the platform, this may be labeled:

    • NEMSIS Submission

    • Web Service Submission

    • Data Exchange

    • Export Destinations

  2. Add a new submission destination alongside the existing state submission.

  3. Enter the GovWorx-provided:

    • Submission Endpoint (URL)

    • Organization Identifier

    • Shared Secret

  4. Save the configuration.

  5. Submit a test record.

  6. Notify the GovWorx implementation specialist once testing is complete.

After successful verification, patient care records will begin appearing in MedAssist for review.

Vendor-Specific Configuration

Each ePCR platform presents submission settings differently. Menu names and configuration options vary among vendors such as ImageTrend, ESO, and others.

This guide focuses on the common workflow rather than vendor-specific navigation to ensure broad applicability.

If assistance locating the submission settings is needed, the ePCR vendor can typically duplicate the existing NEMSIS submission configuration. The GovWorx implementation specialist is also available to assist throughout the process.

Vendor-specific configuration guides will be published as they become available.

Connection Verification

No technical verification is required by the agency after configuration is complete.

The GovWorx implementation specialist will:

  • Confirm receipt of submitted records.

  • Verify that patient care reports are processing correctly.

  • Notify the agency once the connection is operational.

GovWorx continuously monitors incoming submissions. If transmission is interrupted, monitoring systems identify where the failure occurred so corrective action can be taken promptly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this change the existing state or NEMSIS submission?

No. The existing submission to the state EMS repository remains unchanged. MedAssist receives an additional copy of the same records.

Can an ePCR system submit to multiple destinations?

Most NEMSIS-compliant ePCR platforms support transmission to multiple web service endpoints.

Depending on the platform, adding an additional destination may be a simple configuration change or may require assistance from the ePCR vendor. The GovWorx implementation specialist can help determine the appropriate approach and coordinate with the vendor if necessary.

What happens if a patient care report is updated after submission?

If a patient care report is modified after submission, the stored record within MedAssist is updated to reflect the latest version. Existing quality evaluations are retained and are not automatically rerun.

Support

For assistance configuring an ePCR system or verifying connectivity, contact the assigned GovWorx implementation specialist. Support includes configuration guidance, coordination with ePCR vendors when necessary, and confirmation that records are being received and processed successfully.
